Mombasa-Nairobi Railway Project

Mombasa-Nairobi Railway Project

The Kenya Railways Corporation, which spans about 3,000 kilometers and connects three East African countries, is building a new railway to transport passengers and products between Mombasa, East Africa's largest port, and Nairobi, Kenya's capital. In October 2013, I traveled 609 kilometers.

The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway (SGR) will reduce passenger travel time from Mombasa to Nairobi from more than ten hours to four hours, while freight trains will take less than eight hours. The project's Mombasa-Nairobi phase is anticipated to cost US$3.8 billion. The Chinese Exim Bank will supply 90% of the funding, with the Kenyan government contributing the remaining 10%.
