Kitchener sewer development

Kitchener sewer development project

The Kitchener drain was built in 1899 and spans 69 kilometers. Before emptying into the Mediterranean through the Nile Delta, sewage goes through the governorates of Kafr El-Sheikh, Gharbeya, and Dakahlia. 55 million people are living in the area, and they will be the first to benefit from this sewage project.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will fund the first phase of the project for €214 million, with a €25 million grant from the European Union (EU). This component of the project will focus on water collection and treatment of industrial and agricultural waste entering the Kitchener drain.

The EBRD will provide a €148 million loan and a €20 million grant to finance the acquisition of garbage collection equipment in the project's final two phases, as well as cash to rehabilitate six waste recycling plants and develop and rehabilitate five more.

The Kitchener Sanitation and Nile Delta Project will assist over 5 million people in 11 districts throughout Egypt's three governorates. This effort is the first phase of a significant program sponsored by the European Union under the Mediterranean Hotspot Investment Program (MeHSIP).
